Why We Exist
In 2021, our founder James Carter bought a $200 blender based on glowing online reviews โ only to find it couldn't blend frozen fruit without jamming. The reviews were generic, the scores inflated, and not one reviewer mentioned the design flaw that made it frustrating to use daily.
That experience led to a simple idea: what if someone actually tested kitchen gear the way real people use it, scored it honestly, and published the results without manufacturer influence?
That's what HonestGearLab is. We buy products retail, use them in our Boulder, Colorado test kitchen for weeks, and write up exactly what we found โ good, bad, and occasionally ugly.
How We're Different
We buy everything ourselves. No free samples, no review units, no press kits. Every product comes out of our own budget, which means we have real money on the line when something disappoints.
We test for weeks, not hours. A blender that works beautifully on day one might leak by week three. A vacuum that impresses on hardwood might clog on carpet. We test long enough to find out.
Affiliate commissions never influence scores. We disclose every affiliate relationship clearly. A product can earn us a commission and still receive a 4/10 if it earns it.
Rigorous Testing
Every product goes through structured testing across at least 5 performance criteria before we write a single word.
Plain Language
We don't hide behind jargon. If something is bad, we say it's bad. Our readers deserve straight answers.
Always Updated
We revisit reviews every 6 months. Markets change, firmware updates happen, and newer models emerge. Our scores reflect reality, not history.
